ABOUT THE BOOK
In Through Grace: Navigating a Law Enforcement Career Through Her Story, Rev. Dr. Kimberly Davis shares the wisdom she has acquired during her 20-year career as a Chicago Police officer and chaplain. She shares her story, as well as those of other women officers, through a womanist lens to shed light on issues these officers face every day around gender, culture, race, and race relations. Through their honest, engaging accounts, they share the importance of sista circles, maintaining holistic wellbeing for both personal and professional success, and how they can have the career of their dreams through grace.
Navigating a career in law enforcement as a young African American woman is often a lonely endeavor, but seeing officers who patrol and live in African American communities dismantle barriers and provide examples of upward mobility can help young African American women consider a life in law enforcement as Rev. Davis did. African American women officers have a shared experience that is different from that of White women and Black men in the same position; that experience is rooted in womanism. It is wrapped in the understanding of what it means to be a Black woman, the understanding that she (and the women whose stories she shares) were gifted the baton from their ancestors, and the understanding that those who have yet to be born will one day stand on their shoulders.
